Choosing the right lighting size and installation height ensures not only beautiful ambience but also proper illumination and balance in your space. This guide helps you determine ideal dimensions and hanging heights for every room in your home.
How to Measure Your Room
- Measure the length and width of your room (in meters).
- Record the ceiling height from floor to ceiling.
- If installing above a table or island, measure the table length and height.
- For multiple pendants, note the total surface length and leave 10–15 cm spacing on both ends.
Lighting Size Formulas
1. Pendant or Chandelier Diameter
A classic rule: add the room length and width (in meters), then multiply by 8.333 to get the recommended fixture diameter (in centimeters).
Example: Room 5.0 m × 4.0 m → (5 + 4) × 8.333 ≈ 75 cm fixture diameter.
2. Dining Table or Island Height
- Above a table/island: The bottom of the pendant should hang 75–90 cm above the surface.
- Open space installation: The bottom should be about 210–240 cm above the floor.
3. Multiple Pendants Spacing
Reserve at least 10–15 cm of space at each end of the table or island. Then divide the remaining length evenly for balanced placement.
Example: Island length 200 cm, 3 pendants, 15 cm end spacing → (200 - 30)/3 ≈ 56.7 cm center-to-center.
Lighting Guide by Room Type
1. Living Room
Combine a statement chandelier or flush mount with layered accent lighting like floor lamps and wall sconces. Recommended main light diameter: 60–120 cm, depending on room size. Consider dimmable lighting to control brightness and mood.
2. Dining Room
Hang your dining pendant 75–90 cm above the tabletop. Fixture width should be around half to two-thirds of the table width (e.g., 100 cm table → 50–66 cm pendant). For multiple pendants, align them along the table centerline for symmetry.
3. Kitchen Island
Balance is key. Choose 2–4 pendants based on island length. Each pendant bottom should hang 75–90 cm above the counter. For a single linear pendant, ensure it covers the island’s main working zone.
4. Bedroom
Use a central ceiling or semi-flush fixture complemented by bedside lamps or sconces. Bedside wall lights should hang so the bottom sits 60–90 cm above the mattress, depending on bed height and design.
5. Hallway / Entry / Staircase
Choose linear or flush-mounted fixtures for even illumination. Staircases require careful placement to avoid glare and ensure visibility of each step. Maintain a clearance of at least 210 cm from floor to fixture bottom.
6. Bathroom
Select fixtures rated for humidity and safety. Use IP-rated lights (e.g., IP44, IP65) around mirrors, sinks, or showers. Always follow local electrical regulations and have installation completed by a certified electrician.
Understanding IP Ratings
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how well a light resists dust and water. For bathrooms and outdoor areas, choose fixtures with sufficient moisture protection. Example: IP44 for splash zones, IP65 for shower areas or exterior use.
Installation & Safety Tips
- Ensure the ceiling and junction box can support the fixture weight.
- Confirm the lamp voltage matches local standards (EU: 230V / 50Hz).
- Allow adjustable cable length for height flexibility; trimming should be done by a qualified installer.
- Always turn off power before cleaning or replacing bulbs.
- Clean glass shades with a soft, dry cloth to maintain clarity and brightness.
